1. You will need a USA or Canada mailing address to purchase books from Sony's Reader store. However, e-books (both free and purchased) are widely available from many other sources worldwide. If you want to buy books from South African sites, you can check with Kalahari and Exclusive Books.
2. You will need to download Sony's Reader software to connect the e-Reader to your computer, and if you want to purchase DRM protected books, you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions. Both of these programmes are free to download.
