Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 189 Dimensions: 21.2 x 14.5 x 2.1 cm +++ by Eugene Roelofse (With Author's Inscription) +++ This is the story of South Africa's first full-time consumer leader- Eugene Roelofse, whose resignation as Director of the Coordinating Consumer Council in May 1975, after four years of office, created a storm of rumour and counter-rumour in Press and Government circles.
Sorry I Upset You is frank, fearless and also, in a sense, frightening. In his outspoken manner Mr Roelofse takes the reader behind the scenes of the business world. He speaks of con-men and racketeers with a first-hand knowledge gained in investigating the activities of encyclopedia salesmen, mail-order concerns, door-to-door operators, and many others besides. He reveals the vicious side of the furniture trade and insurance business, for example, where Black and Coloured, the illiterate and the unsophisticated, are often exploited with a reckless disregard for what the results could be in terms of racial tensions.
There must have been many who were glad when Mr Roelofse laid down his post as Director of the Consumer Council. There may also be those who will be sorry that his resignation has enabled him to write this book. For an informed and wary public may not be so easy to con.
