1966 South African 10 cents coin, KM#68.1, featuring the English SOUTH AFRICA legend and the portrait of Jan van Riebeeck. This example displays a pronounced thickened rim around both sides of the coin. Although often mistaken for a mint striking error, this effect is the result of prolonged tumbling in an industrial washing machine or clothes dryer, which rolls and compresses the rim inward. Collectors refer to this as dryer damage. While not a true mint error, it remains an interesting and unusual collectible example for South African coin enthusiasts and error coin collectors.
