THE FIRST FLIGHT TOOK PLACE BETWEEN CAPE TOWN AND DURBAN ON 2ND MARCH 1925. THE STAMPS WENT ON SALE ON 26TH FEBRUARY IN THE AREAS SERVED BY NEW AIRMAIL SERVICE AND PRETORIA, JOHANNESBURG AND LONDON.

NOTE THE DATE ON BOTH CANCELLER + CACHET "S.A. AIR MAIL". THIS WAS SET AS 28TH FEBRUARY BECAUSE NO-ONE KNEW EXACTLY WHEN THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE OFF.

N.B. THE AIRMAIL STAMPS ONLY COVERED THE AIRMAIL PORTION OF THE JOURNEY AND HENCE THE NEED FOR THE EXTRA 2d STAMP TO COVER THE NORMAL PART OF JOURNEY.
