This complete 1969 English South African decimal coin set comprises all seven circulating denominations from 1 Cent to 1 Rand, originally issued by the South African Mint. The coins were originally housed in official mint PVC packaging but have been carefully removed and placed in archival 2×2 cardboard flips to prevent long-term PVC damage, a common issue affecting coins stored in early mint sets.

The 1969 Afrikaans year set is particularly desirable to collectors due to two extremely low mintage key coins. The 50 Cents, with a mintage of only 19,968 pieces, is one of the harder South African decimal coins to obtain. Even scarcer is the 20 Cents, struck in a remarkably low mintage of just 9,052 coins, making it one of the most underrated and elusive pieces in South African decimal coinage.

The 1969 1 Rand coin is composed of 80% silver, weighing 15 grams, and features the portrait of Dr. Theophilus Ebenhaezer Dönges on the obverse. Dönges was an influential South African politician who served as Minister of the Interior (19481958) and later Minister of Finance (19581967). In 1967 he was elected State President of South Africa, but suffered a severe stroke shortly before his inauguration and fell into a coma. He tragically never took office and died in January 1968 without regaining consciousness. The 1969 silver Rand was issued with his bust in recognition of his election and intended presidency, making it a historically significant commemorative issue in South African coinage.

The remaining denominations display classic South African decimal designs, including the protea flower and the South African coat of arms, representing the distinctive artistry introduced with the country's 1961 decimalisation.

All coins remain in uncirculated condition, displaying strong strike detail and original mint lustre. This set represents an attractive and increasingly collectible South African mint year set, ideal for numismatists, silver coin collectors, or those building a complete run of South African decimal coinage.
