This complete 1971 South African decimal coin set comprises all eight circulating denominations from ½ cent to 1 Rand, originally issued by the South African Mint. The coins were originally part of a South African Mint set, but have been carefully removed from the original PVC packaging and housed in archival 2×2 flips to prevent long-term PVC damage that often affects coins stored in early mint packaging.
The 1971 year set is particularly desirable to collectors due to two low-mintage issues. The ½ cent, with a mintage of only 32,000 coins, was never released for general circulation, making it one of the scarcer early decimal issues. The 1971 1 Rand coin was also struck in a limited mintage of 32,000 pieces and is composed of 80% silver with a weight of 15 grams, featuring the iconic springbok antelope design.
The remaining coins display classic South African decimal designs including the protea flower and the national coat of arms, representing the distinctive artistry of South African coinage introduced with decimalisation in 1961.
All coins remain in uncirculated condition with strong detail and original mint lustre, making this an attractive collectible set for numismatists and collectors of South African coins.
