STORY: This major history covers the whole range of South African history from the earliest times. All the people of this country appear in the mainstream of the narrative. The third edition is substantially revised and updated. Since 1977, when the book first appeared, a great deal of new work has been done over large areas of South African history, above all with respect to three fields: the pre-colonial period, the cross-frontier encounters of the nineteenth century, and the analysis of the political economy of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The study of African history has made great strides within South Africa, matching the efforts of scholars living outside the Republic. Historians of the Left have also invited students of South African history to view it through a different interpretative lens, and there can be little doubt that the resultant debate has deepened our grasp of the main issues as well as our knowledge of what really happened.

In this new edition the author has tried to take the new developments into account. The structure of the book remains similar to the first edition, but every chapter has been both pruned and expanded, in the interest of up-to-date accuracy and greater clarity. The final interpretive section has been rearranged and amplified. Headings have been introduced throughout the book to facilitate consultation, and the index revised with the same object in mind. The narrative has been extended to 1985 so as to include an estimate of the domestic and external policies of P. W. Bothas Government, and the text has been enlivened by the inclusion of more maps, cartoons and other illustrations.
