📝The Horse Memorial in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha), South Africa, is a poignant tribute to the horses that served and perished during the Second Boer War (18991902). Designed by Joseph Whitehead and unveiled in 1905, the memorial features a life-sized bronze sculpture of a soldier kneeling to offer water to a service horse. It symbolizes compassion and acknowledges the significant role these animals played during the war.

The memorial is located at the corner of Russell and Cape Roads and is a provincial heritage site. It also includes a drinking trough, originally intended for animals, though it was never connected to a water source. The inscription on the memorial reads: "The greatness of a nation consists not so much in the number of its people or the extent of its territory as in the extent and justice of its compassion."
