Gustav Sonn was born in 1853 in Hamburg, Germany and came to the Cape in 1872.
He was a wealthy financier involved predominantly in the mining sector. He occupied several seats on the boards of, and held substantial interests in, mining.
He was one of the founding members of the Wanderers Club and apparently closely associated with the Reform Committee and therefore, the Jameson Raid.
Please note that his name does not appear in the South Africa Medal 1879 roll and the medal has been contemporarily renamed. However, the 1915 South African Who's Who mentions that he is the holder of a "Medal for Northern Border War; bar, 1877-1878".
His unit on the medal is indicated as the Victoria West Volunteers and there is only one other person from this unit that received such a medal.
Due to time constraints only limited information can be supplied in the listing. However, have a look at the description and photograph/s above and if in doubt, please ask.
