Commentary: From 1962 – 1973 no new R2 bank notes circulated

New design – with a Dutch gable and containing vines on the obverse side and the Gariep (previous Verwoerd) dam with its purpose of hydroelectricity and providing water for agriculture (hence the power lines and mielie cob) on the reverse side. A much smaller note nowcarrying the “D” serial number prefix compared to the previous “B” serial number prefix.

This is also the first note in which the language predomination no longer changes with each 1 million forms. Afrikaans remains the predominant language on subsequent R2 note issues and language predomination changes with each higher denomination, i.e. all R5 notes had English predominating, R10 Afrikaans predominating etc.

Since there is no longer language predomination I have created sets of the normal circulating note and its replacement (Prefixed “Y”) where possible in good condition.
Watermark changed back to the van Riebeeck watermark.

Issue: Dr T.W. de Jongh 3rd Issue
Dates: 1976-1978
Watermark: van Riebeeck
Grade: Pristine Unc notes.
ZAR19a (Reference number from the definitive catalogue entitled Dr Heinz Wirz on the Bank Notes of South Africa. Volume 2. The Rands.)
Pick #: 117b
Serial number prefix: D/146
