In the aparheid years, after the English sword manufacturers had stopped supplying South Africa, German manufacturers filled the gap. During the 1980's even they felt international pressure and South Africa resorted to importing the sword parts and assembling the swords in house. This is one of 1980 swords. No makers marks, but a significant a piece in South African military history, and a must for any collector
This sword is not a flimsy, nor light piece. It is a significant weapon. It's design is based on the 1821 Light Cavalry officer's sword design with a three bar guard, a pronounced pommel (a fiercesome weapon in its own right) with a cross-hatched sheath covering the top of the hilt to aid handling, a triple wire bound composite grip, and a 31.5 inch (800mm) fullered blade.
This item is complete with leather frog, scabbard and portepee (sword knot). The overall condition is excellent. The blade, hilt and guard need a wipe with a soft cloth and warm water to rid ithem of years of collected dust and grime - and the sword will be as new. A fantastic piece with a unique place in South African history.
