On his return to America from the diamond fields, the author discovered his friends and acquaintances were largely ignorant of the existence, location, size, and inhabitants of these fields. He therefore set out to write an account of the history of the fields and his experiences there, including notes on how to reach Griqua-Land West from America.  It was first published in 1874 by Inter-Ocean Steam Book and Job Print, Chicago.

This softcover book 207mm x 144mm, housed in a slipcase, is a facsimile of the only known copy in South Africa, produced by the Historical Society of Kimberley. 500 copies were produced, this one being one of the 100 numbered copies within the 500, number 64. At the time of publication, only three copies of the first edition were recorded, these being in private hands in South Africa, a copy at the University of Oregon, and a copy in the Library of Congress. Textured wraps, 78 numbered pages, fold-out map, plus two of publishers' advertisements.
