The obverse of the medal contains in relief the old Coat of Arms of the Republic of South Africa surrounded by a laurel. The reverse design contains, also in relief, the design of the official badge of the South African Police with the words TROUE DIENS and FAITHFUL SERVICE in embossed capital letters, as circumscription, the former above and the latter below the badge. The medal is struck in bronze.
The medal for faithful service replaced the Police Good Service medal and was awarder for eighteen years long service and good conduct. This medal is awarded to a member of the South African Police, on or after 1 September 1963:
(a) served for a period not less than eighteen years, which need not have been continuous, and who had displayed an irreproachable character and exemplary conduct;
(b) at any time prior to 1 September 1963 who served for a period not less than eighteen years, which need not have been continuous, and who had displayed an irreproachable character and exemplary conduct but who because he already held commissioned ranked was not entitled to the Police Good Service medal.
18 May 1979, the qualification period for this medal was changed from eighteen years to ten years.
