In 1933 Mr M.C. van Schoor turned his attention to improving electric-token working, which had been introduced in South Africa in 1900, and he has developed since the instruments described as "electro-mechanical" and known by his name, of which there are three forms, the "absolute", the "permissive" and the "intermediate-crossing" instruments, corresponding to methods of working already extensively used for many years in the Union. The first cost and maintenance charges of the van Schoor equipment are said to be low, and the design to be characterised by simplicity and strength, with an absence of relays and local batteries. The number of electric contacts is stated to be few, and the forced drop lock principle to have been embodied in the controls.
