The Strachan and Co tokens, first issued in 1874, are South Africa's first AUTHENTICATED circulating indigenous currency.

Not only did they circulate but they circulated widely for nearly 60 years in a region the size of Ireland - from southern Natal in the north to Umtata and beyond in the south - and between the Indian Ocean and the Drakensberg (and beyond). Across this region they were recognised by the indigenous people and used by them as money in daily trades for nearly 60 years.

When one considers the authenticity of the coins as part of South African numismatic history they are undervalued - but their dramatic rise in value is best demonstrated by the fact that the first complete set sold was at a Pietermaritzburg Numismatic Society meeting in 1978 for just R30. Last year a couple of complete sets sold for R20,000 here on Bid or Buy.

There are only about 60 complete sets existing - the set three 1/- being recorded as below 70 pieces. Most of the set two MH pieces number less than 100.

The set offered for sale here is complete - the sixteen Strachan and Co coins including a couple of pieces in excellent condition.
