In conceiving the volume we did not set out to tell the full story of South Africa, to describe in any detail the great and often controversial events in this century of turbulence and change, but instead to create a kind of national family album, one which reflects the day-to-day preoccupations of the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of today's South Africans. So our objective in choosing the subjects we cover was threefold: to tell a good story, to trigger memories, and to evoke the mood of the times.
South Africa's Yesterdays is a journey back in time, a diversion down nostalgic byways to a world that many of us never knew, or have forgotten. It will, we hope, provide a brief escape from the cares and strains of today's world.
