Southern Rhodesia 1947 Royal Visit Bronze Medallion with Lug Rare: Numista Rarity Index 91
THE 1947 ROYAL VISIT MEDALLION FROM SOUTHERN RHODESIA COMMEMORATES THE VISIT OF KING GEORGE VI, QUEEN ELIZABETH, AND THEIR DAUGHTERS, PRINCESS ELIZABETH AND PRINCESS MARGARET, TO SOUTHERN AFRICA.
The King and Queen and their two daughters, the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret toured Southern Africa in 1947. THE 1947 ROYAL VISIT MEDALLION FROM SOUTHERN RHODESIA WAS PRIMARILY GIVEN TO EUROPEANS AND WERE A WAY TO COMMEMORATE THE VISIT AND SHOW APPRECIATION FOR THE SACRIFICES THAT SOUTH AFRICA, SOUTHERN RHODESIA AND OTHER COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES HAD MADE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. The medallions were distributed to various individuals and groups during the visit. A similar, but slightly different, version of the medal was produced for chiefs.
The medallion featured conjoined busts of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II mother) on the obverse, with the coat of arms of Southern Rhodesia with Sable Antelope supporters, Zimbabwe Bird crest and motto: SIT NOMINE DIGNA on the reverse.
Composition: Bronze Mintage: Unknown Weight: 14.1 g Diameter: 32.6 mm Thickness: 2.3 mm Numista Rarity Index: 91 (Out of 100 the higher the rarer)
The bronze medals came with and without an attached lug. In South Africa they also did 9ct gold, silver and bronze medals that came as a set of three inside a blue S.A. Mint case. Sets of three containing the gold medal are very rare with an unsubstantiated mintage of only 50.
The design of the conjoined busts on the obverse was by Percy Metcalfe and was first used on the 1937 coronation medal struck by the British Royal Mint. Percy Metcalfe (14 January 1895, Wakefield - 9 October 1970, London) was an English sculptor and designer. He is best known for his coin designs.
