SOUTHERN RHODESIA: Southern Rhodesia was a self-governing British Crown colony in Southern Africa, established in 1923. It existed as a territory south of the Zambezi River and north of the Limpopo River. Initially administered by the British South Africa Company, it gained self-governing status in 1923 after a referendum. The region eventually became part of Zimbabwe in 1980. Southern Rhodesia was established in 1923 after a period of administration by the British South Africa Company. A referendum in 1922 saw the white settler population vote for self-governance rather than joining the Union of South Africa. Prior to 1923, Southern Rhodesia was under the administration of the British South Africa Company, which had been granted a Royal Charter in 1889. Southern Rhodesia later formed part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1953-1963) with Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi). Following the dissolution of the Federation, Southern Rhodesia, then simply known as Rhodesia, unilaterally declared independence in 1965, which was not recognized internationally. The country eventually achieved internationally recognized independence in 1980 as Zimbabwe.
