Vir Adri Rossouw was dit 'n lieflike herfsoggend toe sy in haar kleurvolle tuin gestaan en sing het. In haar hart was daar 'n gevoel van dankbaarheid, want saam met Marinus Rossouw het sy slegs blye dae geken. Daar was net een dowwe plekkie in haar gel : hulle het geen kinders gehad nie. En toe tref die noodloot haar juis as gevolg daarvan.
Dit was 'n witkop-meisie wat daardie oggend aan Adri se voordeur geklop het; 'n meisie wat met 'n enkele sin al die vreugde uit Adri se lewe geneem het. "Ek verwag 'n kind van jou man, Mevrou."
Geluk is soos 'n veilige vesting wat jou teen die koue en ryp van die lewe beskerm, maar geen vesting is so sterk dat sy mure nie kan kraak en verkrummel nie. En dit is wat met Adri Rossouw se vesting van geluk gebeur het.
