Spanish Silver Cob from the Johanna (wrecked at Cape Algulhas in 1662): Coin 3 of 3 on offer

The Johanna (or Joanna) was an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC).

She made five voyages for the EIC between 1671 and 1681. On her sixth voyage she became the first Indiaman lost on the South African coast when she wrecked in February 1682 near Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost point.

In the 1980s and 1990s the harbor shop at Struisbaai (next to Cape Algulas) sold cob coins that were recovered from the wreck by salvagers in 1982. One could buy coins set as pendants or un-mounted coins. The coins came with certificates as shown in the first picture (not included with the lot).

I have 3 of these coins available.

Their weight is as follows :-

First Coin : 7.5 grams

Second Coin (holed for a pendant) : 8.7 grams

Third Coin (to be carried as a pendant) : 21 grams

You are bidding on the third coin here.

I offer a 100% 7-day money back guarantee

As a matter of interest, according to an internet source the average weight of cob coins are as follows (but please take into account that they can lose up to 20% to 30% and even more of their weight due to lying on the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years): 1 Reales cob (Piece of 1) = 3.4 grams, 2 Reales (Piece of 2) = 6.8 grams, 4 Reales (Piece of 4 )= 13.7 grams, 8 Reales (Piece of Eight) = 27. 5 grams.
