SPEARMINT - MENTHA SPICATA

 A culinary & fragrant herb. Add a few chopped mint leaves in a toss salad for an interesting tasty effect.  Use mint to garnish tomato or  pea soups. 

 Sow the seeds in Spring or in Autumn.  Plant mint where there will be plenty of water.  Mint likes the soil to be light, rich, moist and friable.  The  pH should be mildly acidic.  Sow seeds in Spring or Autumn.  Seeds are fine, lightly cover with soil, press down gently in your seed trays, and keep moist. 

 It is a good idea to keep this herb in containers, as it has a vigorous root system.  Once the container is full of mint, as in the picture above, harvest generously, cutting back to about 3 - 5 cm above the top of the container.  Top up the container with compost and water well.  Organic fertilizer will be welcomed by these plants.  They love to be well fed.
