Commonly known as: Spider Plant Mini, Hen and Chicken
Botanical name: Chlorophytum comosum
The Spider Plant is one of the most popular indoor plants in South Africa and across the world. Known locally as Hen and Chicken, this hardy beauty is both forgiving and fast-growing, producing long, striped leaves that arch gracefully from the centre. One of its best features is the way it sends out baby plants (or "spiderettes") on long stems a sign of a happy, healthy plant.
Light: Spider Plants thrive in bright, indirect light but are highly adaptable. They can tolerate lower light conditions, though growth will be slower, and the variegation may fade. Avoid hot direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
💧 Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during spring and summer, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. In winter, reduce watering slightly. Spider Plants are forgiving and will bounce back if you forget a watering now and then.
🌡 Temperature & Humidity: Ideal temperature range is 1528°C, making them perfect for South African homes. They handle average humidity well but will also appreciate a light misting in drier conditions.
🌱 Soil: For optimal drainage and healthy roots, use our premixed Aroid Mix or create your own with Barks Unlimited Potting Soil and Perlite. Adding Bark Chips when repotting keeps the soil airy.
🍃 Feeding: Feed monthly in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser such as our Controlled Release Fertiliser or Organic Fertiliser.
🪴 Repotting: These plants can become root-bound quickly. Repot every 12 years to keep them thriving, and separate the pups if you'd like to grow new plants.
🐛 Pests: Generally pest-free but may attract aphids or spider mites. Treat promptly with insecticidal spray if needed.
The Spider Plant is a perfect beginner's plant that never goes out of style easy, tough, and endlessly rewarding.
