About this object
DO NOTE THAT THIS ITEM HAS BEEN RESTORED.
This is a Spong's bean slicer. English manufacturer, Spong & Co, began manufacturing their bean slicers in the late 1800s and they were a luxury item for more well-off families. In the 1930s, Spong's advertised the slicer as 'domestic labour-saving slicers'. This idea of tools for labour saving became increasingly popular as more women went to work and had less time for household chores.
