1 x  medium spotted calla bulb (Zantedeschia albomaculata)

- longer side is 55-65mm (bulb is oval-shaped), see second picture
- plant in September or October, not any earlier, it will not grow until its dormancy is over

- flower varies between individual bulbs in the batch, from pale yellow to white

- not a hybrid, but a pure species 

- the bulb is just about big enough to put on a flower or 2 this season but its not guaranteed, if you treat it well, it should definitely put on a show next season as its bulb can easily more than double in size (weight) under optimal conditions 

- it puts out leaves in October and the leaves will die back by late April, earlier if its too hot and you don't provide it with shade from the beginning of the season

- best to think of it as a foliage plant that puts out a few flowers each season, rather than a plant that will flower profusely as it tends to not produce that many flowers compared to other bulbous plants because its a pure species and not one of the modern hybrids 

Plant description 

The spotted arum lily, Zantedeschia albomaculata, is a tuberous perennial native to grasslands, woodland margins, and seasonally moist habitats across southern and eastern Africa, including South Africa. It is closely related to other arum lilies but is distinguished by its attractive foliage and adaptability to a wider range of growing conditions.

This species produces elegant, arrow-shaped leaves that are often marked with distinctive white spots, giving the plant ornamental value even when not in flower. During the growing season, it bears creamy white to pale yellow spathes surrounding a central spadix. The flowers are held above the foliage on sturdy stems and create a striking display against the patterned leaves. Following flowering, clusters of berries may develop, turning yellow to orange as they mature.

Zantedeschia albomaculata is well adapted to seasonal rainfall patterns, growing actively during wetter periods and retreating into dormancy when conditions become dry or cold. Its underground tuber stores water and nutrients, allowing it to survive unfavourable conditions and resprout when growth conditions improve. The species is valued in gardens for its elegant flowers, decorative foliage, and ability to naturalise in suitable locations.

Growing Zantedeschia albomaculata is relatively easy. It prefers full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil that retains some moisture during active growth. Regular watering promotes healthy foliage and flowering, but the soil should not remain waterlogged for extended periods. Once dormant, watering can be reduced significantly until new growth appears. It can tolerate light frost when established, though severe cold may damage the foliage. With proper care, it produces reliable seasonal displays of both attractive leaves and elegant flowers.
