ON AUCTION IS THIS SOUTH AFRICAN STERLING SILVER WHISKY DECANTER LABEL. IT HAS A SOUTH AFRICAN SPRINGBOK SILVER HALLMARK AND INITIALS "TFSC" (THE MAKER'S MARK OF THE FOX SILVER COMPANY A NOTABLE SILVERSMITHING STUDIO ORIGINALLY BASED IN HARARE, RHODESIA.)
 
The springbok mark on silver is an official and historical hallmark used by the South African governments assay offices. The specific springbok hallmark designates both the metal's purity standard and the region of manufacture. Between 1922 and 1975 South African silver items were typically marked with a profile of a springbok's head (facing left or right, depending on the period). This mark guaranteed the item was made of sterling silver (or a specific recognized standard) within South Africa. From 1975 the detailed springbok image was replaced by a more stylized single springbok head encased in an oval shape
 
Decanter labels (also called decanter tags, bottle tickets, or wine tickets) are small, decorative tags hung around the neck of a decanter to identify its contents. They first appeared in England in the 1730s as a solution to distinguish between various spirits and fortified wines stored in identical, unlabelled clear glass decanters. They prevent mix-ups when pouring, especially with clear spirits or similarly colored wines. Their heyday lasted from 1770 to 1860, peaking in popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras.
