Biography
John van de Ruit was born in Durban, South Africa and educated at Michaelhouse and the University of Natal where he completed a Masters degree in Drama and Performance. Since 1998 he has been a professional actor, playwright and producer, winning numerous awards. He is best known for his collaboration with Ben Voss on the hit satirical sketch show Green Mamba which has toured extensively throughout Southern Africa since 2002. Spud is his first novel, and was released by Penguin in September 2005 to critical acclaim. The book went on to become one of the bestsellers of 2005, and continued this momentum well into 2006. In August 2006, Spud won the prestigious Booksellers' Choice Award.

Synopsis
Its South Africa, 1990. The country still squirms under the iron fist of apartheid. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela, and more importantly, its Spud Miltons first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. Cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe, a senile granny, and a dormitory full of strange characters, Spud has to forge a new life for himself in this foreign and sometimes hostile environment. Surrounded by names such as Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path towards manhood. The path, it seems, could be a rather long road. Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal nightswimming to the cricket field, from ghostbusting to teacher baiting. He also invites us into the mind of a boy struggling to come to terms with a strange new worl.
a boy whose eyes are being opened to love, friendship and complete insanity.

From fits of laughter, fluttering hearts and fine heart wrenching moments I thorughly enjoyed every eavesdropping snippet into the life of a Spud as he wades his way into manhood. Excellent and witty. Sir, please may we have some more?

Spud

Brilliant! I was belly laughing in restaurants and through shopping - my teenaged daughters are still mortified and am barred from reading 'silly' books in public. The writing and language brought so many warming memories of my schooldays. Read this book in public at your own peril! Absoulutley hilarous and will also make u cry silently.

Sittin in my hospital bed sufferinf from pneumonia, few things could put a smile, let alone laughter to my life, that was until picking up Spud! Beneath the humor, is a real boy and that's what's great, the story is real, touching, funny and faces up to things people wouldnt say. By the end of my stay everyone in the ward had a copy, its that great )
