About the Book

Set in 1990, as South Africa stands on the brink of major change, John "Spud" Milton begins his first year at an elite boys' boarding school.

Armed with little more than his diary and a sharp sense of humour, Spud must survive eccentric teachers, bizarre dorm mates, and the chaos of adolescence.

From awkward encounters and school misadventures to deeper reflections on friendship, identity, and family, Spud's journey is both wildly funny and surprisingly touching.

Through his honest and often hilarious diary entries, readers are drawn into a uniquely South African story of growing up.

Full of wit, charm, and unforgettable characters, this bestselling novel has become a modern South African classic.
