Snowboarding on sherbet? Some of the tracks you'll find in SSX: Snowboard Supercross have broken from the traditional cool-blue snow colour in favour of tropical snow cones. But this game sports more than just some crazy colours--it also contains a funky soundtrack that enhances the game as you wind around and through icebergs and freeway systems. Choose from a variety of boarders--each with trendy outfits and techno themes--and find your own shortcuts through the expansive tracks. SSX: Snowboard Supercross comes with an adrenaline meter to which you add energy by pulling off little tricks, and from which you take energy to perform the big-ticket combos.
With its mesmerising graphics and high replayability, SSX: Snowboard Supercross is one of those genre-defining and system-justifying games that will even please folks who normally dislike snowboarding games. It's just that good.
What makes SSX a standout from similar games is Electronic Arts' amazing attention to detail. The tracks show much variety in their outrageous twists, bumps, jumps and ramps. However, to best utilise them, you must perform potentially back-breaking, neck-snapping tricks. Okay, you won't actually suffer any physical damage, but the cartoony falls do look rather painful.
The tricks, which earn you speed bonuses, are performed through successfully performing complex button-mashing and joystick-twisting combs and of course give you better chance of winning races and therefore unlocking new characters and snowboards, each with dramatic performance differences.
Take your eyes off the well-animated racer and you will see bright lighting, cheering crowds and lots of snow spray to show off the graphical power of the PS2.
The bumping soundtrack changes on the fly, based on your performance. The better your tricks and speed, the wilder and more up-tempo the music gets, while all of the enormous courses (some of which can take close to ten minutes to finish) have many shortcuts and alternate routes to cut into your finishing time. --Mark Brooks
