"Dame Mabel Brookes is a descendant of the distingushed Balcombe family who were hosts to Napoleon during his exile upon the island of St. helena; the present book is the result of the author's intimate study of the characters and situation then pertaining on the island.
In particular this is the story of Napoleon and Betsy Balcombe the young girl who amused and provoked the Emporer, a tomboy who cared not a jot for Napoleon or anybody else. She became his friend and confidante- he advised her about her dresses and her admirers, and she rode his horse to the local race meetings and generally scandalised the little society of the island, until she left St. helena two years before his death.
Dame Mabel Brookes has produced here a vivid story on a basis of sound scholarship, which together with the illustrations she has provided, make this one of the most revealing Napoleonic studies ever published."
