St. John's Wort, Hypericum perforatum
is a shrubby perennial plant with cheery bright yellow flowers.
It is native to Europe and Asia, ancient times brought fame to the St. John’s Wort plants because of the discovery of a fluorescent red pigment, named hypericin that oozes from the crushed flowers.
St. John's Wort has a long history of herbal use. The most notable feature of St. John’s wort is the presence of wide bright yellow flowers. The flowers consist of five petals surrounding a dense tuft of protruding yellow stamens that resemble an old fashioned shaving brush. The flowers are borne in groups and appear from July through August
Reddish-brown fruit capsules ripen in September and persist well into the winter.
