Star of the South - Jules Verne - Translated by Stephen Gray - Protea - 2003 - Hardcover gloss in new condition.

In 1884 Jules Verne published another novel in his series of Extraordinary Voyages that included such classic science-fiction adventures as Twenty Thousand Leagues under the sea and Around the World in Eighty Days.
This time he was responding to the sensational news of the miners rush to Kimberley in the Cape of Good Hope, and the speculative scientific theories about the formation and exploitation of diamonds made newly topical. The title of his latest romance was LEtoile du Sud.
Always well informed about the developing exploration of Colonial Africa, Verne pushed his new rollicking love story in an obstacle race right over the known borders and back again, with much entertaining satire of conquistador types to reach a beguiling happy ending for his young democrats of the future.

Translated here as A Star of the South in a complete English version, together with the engravings illustrating the original edition.
