Release: 2015
Star Wars Battlefront is a visually spectacular return to the classic Star Wars shooter concept, reimagined by DICE with the Frostbite engine. Rather than attempting to reproduce the large-scale progression and campaign structure of Battlefield, this reboot focuses heavily on the fantasy of participating in battles from the original trilogy.
The result is one of the most authentic-feeling Star Wars games ever made. Fighting across Hoth, Endor, Tatooine and Sullust while AT-ATs march overhead, X-wings fly through the sky and Darth Vader enters the battlefield is genuinely spectacular. Unfortunately, the game's emphasis on multiplayer comes at the expense of depth, progression and single-player content.
Battlefront uses familiar first- and third-person shooting mechanics, but the weapons and equipment are designed specifically around the Star Wars universe.
Blasters feel different from conventional modern firearms, while Star Cards provide special abilities such as grenades, ion weapons and defensive equipment. Players can also find Power-Ups scattered throughout the battlefield, providing temporary access to vehicles, weapons or iconic characters.
The shooting is accessible rather than highly technical. This makes the game easy to pick up, but experienced FPS players may find the mechanics somewhat simplistic.
There is also a deliberate lack of traditional ammunition management, allowing players to concentrate on positioning, objectives and combat.
Excellent Star Wars-themed gunplay.
Very accessible controls.
Weapons and equipment feel authentic to the universe.
Power-Ups create exciting battlefield moments.
Third-person perspective works particularly well with heroes and vehicles.
Large battles can be spectacular.
Shooting lacks the depth of Battlefield or Call of Duty.
Star Card system can feel restrictive.
Weapon balance isn't always consistent.
Some combat encounters become repetitive.
Limited weapon customization compared with other shooters.
Multiplayer is the heart of Star Wars Battlefront.
The game offers a range of modes, from smaller objective-based battles to huge 40-player conflicts.
The standout is Walker Assault, where Rebels and Imperials fight across large maps while the Rebels attempt to activate uplinks and ultimately destroy advancing AT-AT walkers.
This mode captures the feeling of the original trilogy better than almost any other game. Seeing an AT-AT approaching while TIE Fighters and X-wings battle overhead is an incredible spectacle.
Supremacy is another excellent large-scale mode, focusing on capturing control points and pushing the opposing team backward.
Smaller modes include Blast, Drop Zone, Droid Run and Cargo, providing more traditional team-based combat.
Walker Assault large-scale Rebel vs Imperial battles centered around AT-ATs.
Supremacy large-scale territory control.
Fighter Squadron aerial battles featuring X-wings, TIE fighters and hero ships.
Heroes vs. Villains iconic heroes and villains battle alongside regular troops.
Hero Hunt one hero faces a group of opposing soldiers.
Blast traditional team deathmatch.
Cargo a Star Wars interpretation of capture-the-flag.
Droid Run teams fight to control mobile droids.
Drop Zone teams compete for escape pods.
The variety is good, although some modes feel significantly more compelling than others.
Playing as an iconic Star Wars character is one of the game's biggest attractions.
Characters such as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Boba Fett and Emperor Palpatine can appear during certain multiplayer battles.
Heroes are dramatically more powerful than ordinary soldiers, turning them into temporary objectives for both teams. Playing as Vader and cutting through Rebel soldiers with a lightsaber is an undeniably satisfying experience.
Vehicles are similarly enjoyable.
Players can pilot:
X-wings
TIE fighters
A-wings
TIE Interceptors
AT-STs
AT-ATs
Millennium Falcon
Slave I
The vehicle system is intentionally simplified, making it accessible to players who aren't experienced with flight games.
The downside is that these mechanics aren't integrated deeply enough into every multiplayer mode. Some matches feel like traditional infantry shooters with Star Wars elements rather than complete combined-arms battles.
Star Wars Battlefront is a game built around Star Wars fantasy rather than shooter complexity. It doesn't have the sophisticated gunplay, progression or large-scale systems of Battlefield, but it succeeds brilliantly at making the player feel like they are participating in an original-trilogy battle.
The sight of AT-ATs advancing across Hoth while Rebels desperately attempt to activate uplinks is spectacular. Flying an X-wing through an Imperial formation or temporarily taking control of Darth Vader provides moments that few other games can replicate.
Unfortunately, the lack of a proper campaign and relatively shallow progression significantly limit the overall package. Many of the smaller multiplayer modes also feel less memorable than Walker Assault and Supremacy.
For Star Wars fans, however, Battlefront remains a highly enjoyable and visually outstanding multiplayer shooter. Its presentation and atmosphere are exceptional, even if the underlying gameplay lacks the depth needed to make it a truly great FPS.
