Fluid Dynamics was not our favorite course in college. However; it is awfully fun to watch fluid mechanics in action from the comfort of our living room. We"re calling these "motion lamps" because our friends at Mathmos (hi; Mathmos!) have the rights to the name usually associated with these. It"s awfully relaxing to watch the wax move up and down as it expands through heating and becomes more and less dense compared to the water. In fact; maybe if the Empire and the Rebels could have sat down and watched a nice calming lamp like these; they could have avoided that whole ugly war thing altogether. Or not. These Star Wars Motion Lamps fashioned after lightsabers require you to pick a side. Choose Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader. Luke"s features his ROTJ hilt with blue lava-like wax; Vader"s has the Empire hilt with red lava-like wax. Also; we think our mechanical engineers could take this opportunity to go head-to-head; based on whether they think the motion inside the lamp is demonstrating Rayleigh¿¿¿Taylor instability or Rayleigh¿¿¿B¿¿nard convection. Or; you know; we could agree that they"re both lovely bits of physics; get one of each; and move on. Some of our audience is young; so although most of you can identify this device; you may not have actually owned one. Some tips from those of us who have: It takes a little while (generally around an hour) for the liquids to heat up and for the wax to really start moving freely. Do not shake or move it while it"s on. You"ll emulsify the fluids; and then you"ll be sad. Do not leave it on for more than 10 hours. Do not drop. It"s glass. If it breaks; use rubber gloves to clean up using whatever cleaning agent is recommended for the surface the spill is on. Remember; young Padawan; that the glass and base after the lamp is turned off hot will remain. Hmm. Yes.
