Born in Delphos, Ohio in 1900, and once described as the world's greatest non-professional astronomer, the author is credited with the discovery of several comets and novae.

Hardcover small octavo first published in the United Kingdom 1967 by Macmillan and Company Limited. The jacket is very worn, creased and stained in places, with many chips and short tears. Original dark blue cloth with silver spine titlnig. Taped horizontally to the inside front board with a single short piece of tape, is a carbon copy of a letter written on a United States Senate letterhead by Senator John Glenn, the third American in space, and the first American to orbit earth, dated April 12, 1978, to the author, congratulating him on a milestone achieved in the field of variable star astronomy. The author has written and signed a dedication in pencil on the page opposite, to (Michiel Daniel) "Danie" Overbeek, a South African member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, who was one of the most prolific amateur discoverers of variable stars. A small photo of Danie Overbeek is pasted onto the bottom right corner of this page. Leslie C. Peltier has again signed in full in pen on the title page. 236 clean pages.
