On a cold, moonless night at 11.39pm on the 14th of April 1912 a ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
Within three hours, that ship slipped beneath the waves taking with it over 1 500 people.
That ship was the Royal Mail Steamship Titanic of the White Star Line.

Steiff created the Titanic Mourning Bear in 1912 in the wake of the disaster.

Steiff produced 494 black mourning bears for the British market and where displayed in shop windows throughout London.
