Stenocereus marginatus originates from Central Mexico where some of its common names include Organ Pipe, Organo, Jarritos. Botanically it has many synonyms which include Pachycereus marginatus, Marginatocereus marginatus, Lemaireocereus marginatus, Cereus marginatus, Cereus gemmatus and Pachycereus marginatus var. gemmatus. It is a very neat, straight columnar, sometimes branching, cactus with small spines along linear rows up and down the plant. It forms an upright and clumping, stiff and imposing, columnar cactus. In cultivation they can grow up to 4 m tall or more. In older plants the stems are 5-10 cm thick and dark green. The epidermis surface is slightly rough to the feel, like fine sandpaper. It may have from 5 to 7 or more ribs that will arise 2 cm from the body of the plant. The spines are longer in the juvenile specimens, while are very short in the mature branches. It bears pink to greenish flowers during spring.
