STEPHEN CRANE (1871-1900):
Stephen Crane was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. His life was brief and he died of recurring malaria and tuberculosis before he was 29 years of age while reporting the Spanish American War for the New York Journal. In the short prolific 8 years before his death he wrote 7 novels, 5 volumes of short stories, 2 volumes of poetry and a history of the great battles of the world.
The Red Badge of Courage was his most significant work. Published in 1895 it describes the psychological fears that a young farm boy Henry Fleming experiences in his first exposure to battle in the American Civil War. He did it with great success even though the novel was written 30 years after the Civil War ended. Although he had some shellfire experience as a war correspondent he mostly wrote about the soldiers agony from his imagination. He wrote the novel in a mere 10 days and sold the manuscript to a newspaper syndicate for a mere 100 dollars. It was published by Appleton & Company in 1895 and became an immediate success.
