VINTAGE 1940S BALLERINA STERLING SILVER JACKET EARRINGS. THESE FABULOUS 2 BALLERINA EARRINGS WAS DESIGNED BY FREDRICK MASSINGHAM AND RETAILED IN LONDON JEWELLERS DH PHILIPS. IT HAS MARKS SHOWING THE REGISTERED DESIGN OF 853615.
Frederick Massingham (1904-1977) was a designer, notably a silversmith, who created a popular line of silver ballerina brooches in the mid-20th century (specifically hallmarked in Birmingham in the late 1940s and 1950s). These pieces were retailed by stores like D.H. Phillips of London and remain a recognizable vintage jewelry item.He lived in England and passed away at age 72 or 73 in 1977.A Collection of Fred Massingham's designs are on display in the UK's Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

MARKINGS: AT BACK ARE VERY FAINT MARKINGS. WHAT COULD BE SEEN IS REG DES NO 853615. THERE APPEARS TO BE BIRMINGHAM STERLING HALLMARKS BUT IT IS NOT CLEAR. I HAVE ADDED PHOTOS FROM ONLINE LISTINGS THAT SHOW SIMILAR MARKINGS AND WHERE THE HALLMARKS ARE CLEARER. THESE EARRINGS DID HOWEVER CHEMICALLY TEST POSITIVE FOR SILVER.
CONDITION: SILVER HAS A BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE PATINA. STRUCTURALLY GOOD.
