Sterling Silver Collared Bakelite Handle Fish Knife (6) and Fork (5) Set Vintage England 1950s  

ON AUCTION IS A VINTAGE FISH KNIFE AND FORK SET. EACH HAS A STERLING SILVER COLLAR (MARKED STERLING) AND BAKELITE HANDLE. THE FISH KNIFE BLADES ARE STAMPED EPNS. THE FISH KNIVES ARE ENGRAVED WITH SCROLL LEAFLIKE MOTIF AND THE FORKS ARE ENGRAVED WITH A SHIELD OR CREST OUTINE. THEY WERE FULL OF PATINA BUT CLEANED UP WELL.
 
THIS IS A LOVELY VINTAGE SET OF 11 ENGLISH SILVER-PLATED FIRST COURSE FISH KNIVES AND FORKS FROM AROUND THE 1950S. PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE 5 FORKS BUT ONLY 6 KNIVES AVAILABLE. THE KNIVES AND FORKS HAVE DARK CREAM COLORED BAKELITE HANDLES, AS WAS THE FASHION IN THE 1940S AND 50S.
 
Their collars are hallmarked Sterling Silver and their stainless steel blades are silver plated (marked). Lovely floral etched scroll design on the knives. The 6 knives are all solid and well made, a few scrapes and patina marks but no loosening of the Bakelite handles or rust mark. The 5 forks are all identical (Sterling Silver Collars and Silverplated steel) and have a pretty shape to their pronged end. Apart from a few scrapes forks also in good condition.

Collars were often a decorative element, popular during the Victorian period. They can be found with elaborate designs, such as flowers, shells, or swags. Also known as a ferrule it is the small circular metal rings that fastens the blade or tines of a piece of cutlery to its handle especially when the handle is made of a different material (such as bakelite, mother-of-pearl, horn, ebony, or ivorine) than the working end. In high-quality pieces, the collar may be made of sterling silver and fully hallmarked.
