Thirty-five years ago, in 1978, the Africana Commemorative Mint issued the Cape Heritage set commemorating the coins that circulated in South Africa in the very early years of our country.

The following picture (as an example) shows the huge size of one of these coins compared to a Silver Crown. The Proof Coin weighs 37.3 grams and is 45.0 mm in diameter. It is struck in Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) and coated in gold. It contains MORE than TWICE the amount of silver than the crown in the picture!
