ON AUCTION IS THIS DECORATIVE STERLING SILVER THIMBLE. ITS WEIGHT IS 4.71G. IT FEATURES A BEAUTIFUL FLORAL AND GEOMETRIC DESIGN IN RELIEF.
 
IT BEAR HALLMARK INITIALS "CH" (CHARLES HORNER WAS A FAMOUS ENGLISH SILVERSMITH AND JEWELLER FROM HALIFAX, ENGLAND, RENOWNED FOR HIS ART NOUVEAU BROOCHES, PENDANTS, HAT PINS, AND "DORCAS" THIMBLES.).IT HAS THE CHESTER DATE MARK FOR 1902 (Gothic B).
 
"In 1885 Charles Horner patented a revolutionary new silver thimble with a steel core - what was to become the Dorcas thimble. He called his thimble the Dorcas, which was a name familiar to Victorian women who sewed because the sewing circles in Victorian times were Dorcas sewing circles. This new premium silver thimble could be ornately decorated so would serve as an engagement gift, but could also be safely used. Post 1905 the Dorcas thimbles were marked Dorcas with the Charles Horner mark and size No."
