Complete set of South Africa's first widely circulating indigenous currency - the Strachan and Co currency tokens
First issued circa 1874 the S&Co served as the coinage of the Griqua people and other African tribes in East Griqualand for nearly sixty years before being outlawed in 1932.
The 6d MH still has some of the original lustre.. seen as light in the photo
The Griqua Government under Adam Kok III recognised these coins as circulating currency - as did the Standard Bank in Kokstad in the late 1870s.
They continued to be used by the indigeous people in trade and even payment of fines* into the 1900s in regions like Umzimkulu. (*Source Judge Tom Mullins who, as the then Magistrate at Ixopo in the late 1930s bought about 30 S&Co pieces from the court's archives)
The rare MH set includes this 6d featured at the top which is near UNC and one of the finest of its type in existence today.
