Papaver rhoeas, with common names including common poppy, corn poppy, corn rose, field poppy, Flanders poppy, and red poppy, is an annual herbaceous species of flowering plant in the poppy family Papaveraceae.

Symbolism and history
  • The poem In Flanders Fields: In 1915, Canadian military doctor Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote the poem while serving in the trenches during the Second Battle of Ypres. He noticed how the resilient poppies bloomed across the battle-scarred landscape. The poem inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers.
  • Remembrance Day: The poppy is worn or used in wreaths on Remembrance Day (November 11) in Commonwealth nations to honor those who died in service. The tradition began with American humanitarian Moina Michael, who was moved by McCrae's poem and vowed to wear a poppy in memory of the fallen.
  • Poppy Appeal: Following Moina Michael's initiative, Frenchwoman Anna Guérin began selling silk poppies to raise money for war orphans. This idea was adopted by the Royal British Legion in 1921, establishing the annual Poppy Appeal, which raises funds for veterans and their families.
