Striking Tortoiseshell Handblown Art Vase 25cm High One of Two on Auction

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL BROWN TORTOISESHELL VASE. IT APPEARS HANDMADE WITH BUBBLES VISIBLE ON INSIDE AND REMNANTS OF PONTIL MARK TO BASE. IN GOOD CONDITION.

Tortoiseshell art glass is usually hand-blown glass. Two layers of glass has light and brown glass shaped in blotches trapped between the two layers. It resembles the markings on the shell of a tortoise hence the name.

The original patent for tortoise glass was registered in London back in 1880 by Francis Pohl and SA Whitman. They were from Europe were tortoiseshell glas was alreafy made in Germany.  Their patent described the process of first blowing bulbs of brown glass and then breaking them up in fragments. The you blow two bulbs of clear glass one of which was rolled over the fragments of brown glass so that they stuck to the clear glass. The other bulb of clear glass then had its top cut away so that theclear glass with fragments can be inserted into it. The two bulbs was then joined and blown into the required shape. This complicated process produced this beautiful tortoiseshell glass.
