About Ceropegia woodii
Ceropegia woodii are perennial succulent vines indigenous to the Eastern Cape. The genus belongs to the family, Asclepiadaceae and are caudiciform, meaning that a section of their stems are swollen to store water for times of drought.
General Description
The common name, "String of Hearts" is very appropriate, as the leaves are distinctly heart shaped. Stems are vine-like, but cannot actually climb on their own, so they need to be trained if grown on a trellis or wreath. The picture on the left is a section of one my wife has been training up our burglar bars in the kitchen window.
Flowering is pretty much year round, and last quite a long time. Aside from having interesting flowers, the leaves themselves are very attractive with silver & green on top, and green to purple underneath.
Uses
They can be grown as wreaths, on trellises, hanging bowls or baskets and are happy in any area in the house that has quite bright, but not direct sunlight. Ceropegia woodii can also be grown outdoors in hardiness zones 11 and 12 (areas with minimum temps of 4.5°C or over). The long trailing stems which can grow to longer than 1 meter form an attractive veil, or waterfall effect when grown in a hanging basket, or when a pot is placed on a table corner.
