Marie Grotepass was born in Calvinia South Africa. She graduated with a B.Sc. Pharmacy cum laude from Rhodes University and followed this up with an Honours in Pharmacology obtained cum laude from Stellenbosch University. She studied Fine Arts at the University of South Africa and obtained a BA.F.A. The Masters of Fine Arts was obtained cum laude through the University of Stellenbosch. She has had 15 solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows in South Africa and abroad.
She has had a solo exhibition in Luxembourg and America. Her work is in private collections in South Africa and Europe, France and Holland and in America.

Personal Statement: My work is rooted in realism. I have an interest in European tradition of painting and classical training. The subject matter is a reflection of this interest as well as the essentially female concerns of everyday objects. I believe that the unique combination of background, upbringing and place of an artist defines a particular identifiable mark. In this way the object is a vehicle for a particular artistic identity. By placing objects and figures on one field they form a unique relationship to one another and to the viewer. I enjoy the act of painting and celebrate the texture and colour of paint.
