Born in 1918 in Pietermaritzburg, Errol was a painter of landscapes, still life, sea scapes, figures and wildlife. He worked in oil. Errol passed away on 3 April 2007. He was mainly self-taught but during the early 1940’s studied at the Natal Technical College. He spent a while working and sketching in the Zululand Lowveld.
He was a professional guitar player in night clubs from 1940 to 1947. During World War 2 he was at the Natal Field Artillery. In 1948 he lived in Knysna. He was guided in those early days by the artist WG Wiles. In 1954 he moved to Johannesburg and held numerous one man exhibitions by invitation as well as being prominently featured in many group exhibitions.
In the late sixties he went to live in Ramsgate on the Natal South Coast and in 1978 opened the Errol Boyley Gallery. In 1985 he left the South Coast for a brief spell in Underberg Natal, he moved to Pietermaritzburg in 1986. He lived and worked throughout SA and visited Madagascar in 1973.
Exhibitions – 1956 Herbert Evans Gallery, Johannesburg first of many solo exhibitions held in SA. Errol Boyley Represented Pretoria Art Museum, University of Stellenbosch.
Publicly commission 1971 commissioned by the Johannesburg Turf Club to paint the Victoria Turf Club, Melbourne Australia.
One of the biggest Art Collectors in SA happens to be the Reserve Bank in Pretoria. Amongst their collection they have approx. fourteen Pierneef oils and sixteen Errol Boyleys.
Errol was approached by the Royal Arts Academy in London for some works of art.
His work has found a place in many collections throughout the world, apart from private and public collections in SA.
The painting is unframed and measures 22.5 x 17.5 cm and is oil on board. The condition of the painting is very good.
