ON AUCTION IS A BEAUTIFUL LARGE GIANT HEART COCKLE CLAM SHELL FROM THE INDIAN OCEAN. IT HAS TWO PAIRED HALVES WITH BEAUTIFUL RIDGES
Cockle clams are medium sized, edible marine bivalves with prominent ribbed shells, found in sandy and muddy intertidal zones. They are filter feeders, consuming plankton and organic matter from the water. Another name for cockles are bivalve mollusks. These creatures have two valves (two parts) that fits snugly together. Cockles have over 250 species globally! OUR SEASHELL IN SPECIFIC IS A SPECIES OF MARINE BIVALVE MOLLUSK, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE GIANT COCKLE OR GIANT HEART COCKLE (PLAGIOCARDIUM PSEUDOLIMA ). WHEN VIEWED FROM THE SIDE, THE SHELL DISPLAYS A DISTINCT HEART-SHAPED OUTLINE, WHICH GIVES IT ITS COMMON NAME. IT IS HIGHLY RIBBED AND CAN HAVE A "BREATHTAKING COLOR PATTERN".
The shells typically range in length from 70 mm to 150 mm.This marine species is found in various marine environments. Specimens have been collected off the coast of Kenya (e.g., Lamu) and Zanzibar, East Africa, often trawled from depths of 20-25 meters.
