 STUNNING ORIGINAL 1851 RELIGIOUS STEEL ENGRAVING BY ALBERT PAYNE, AFTER STILKE - PILGRIMS IN THE DESERT

IT'S IN GREAT CONDITION AND FRAMED

MEASURES 273 x 206mm

FRAMED = 440 x 500mm

Original religious steel engraving by Albert Henry PAYNE (1812 - 1902), after the German romantic painter Hermann Anton STILKE (1803 - 1860). Albert Henry Payne was born in London on 14 December 1812 and died in Leipzig on 7 May 1902. He was a steel engraver, painter and illustrator. He was English, but lived in Leipzig from 1839 onward.

Below the image is inscibed: STILKE pinxt / Gräfl. Raczynskische Gem Gallerie / A.H. PAYNE sc. / Pélerins dans le désert / Pilgrims in the Desert / Pilger in der Wüste / Published for the Proprietors by A.H. Payne, Dresden & Leipzig.

The artwork is framed in a green and gold frame and behind reflective glass. The artwork will be extremely well packaged and wrapped for postage.

Chine-collé is a special technique in printmaking, in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate.
