What a find! This stunning and truly rare radio was manufactured by "Truphonic Radio Ltd of London." Under the wooden speaker guard is the pencilled date of 1929, as well as the initials of the person who assembled it. It also bears a metal manufacturer's plate with the number: "L7493."
The following is from Radio Museum.org: " Truphonic existed in a small way before 1932, but was liquidated, and subsequently bought by Mr. Jack Hester. It became a respected firm producing 250 sets a week, until the main staff members joined up to the 2nd. World War and production ceased. The factory was taken over by Philips for wartime production, and Truphonic ceased to be."
So, this set was manufactured before the company was liquidated for the first time!
The radio is in excellent condition, and all the valves are still in tact. I was told that the set was working when last tried, but the coating on the wiring is now very worn - and the wiring would need to be replaced before trying it out! It was obviously a battery-powered model, as there are clips rather than a plug, as well as a back compartment meant for the battery.
The whole thing is built into a wonderful leather case which is still in perfect condition - it even has a couple of bits of old steam steamship labels on it! Case measures 35cmx40cmx 22cm when closed.
